Kangaroo Isand is a Ligurian Bee Sancturary

In 1884 Ligurian Bees were introduced to Kangaroo Island. Due to Kangaroo island’s isolation the government passed legislation to proclaim it a Ligurian Bee Sanctuary in 1885. We now have the purest strain of Ligurian Bees left in the world.

Kangaroo Island Living Honey is a family-owned business that started from a passion for Bees. Shawn, a farmer started to work with bees as a hobby and has continued to build the business to approx. 250 productive hives to date. They produce raw organic honey and honey products that are organically certified through NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia).

It’s possible to visit the Bee Hives on the farm and book a bee keeping experience with Shawn and learn a lot about these very important Ligurian Bees.

An interesting fact is that Bees only travel 2 kms from home, so locations of hives and their surrounding environment need to be protected.

The Bees live and work at producing honey in one of the most pristine environments in the world. With almost half of the island being National Parks and conservation areas plus there are no genetically modified grains grown on the island this creates a protected environment for the bees.

Kangaroo Island is one of the few places left in the world where healthy queen bees can be bred and exported to countries around the world to help maintain their hives

Protecting the Ligurian Bees is crucial, without them many food crops will fail, having a disastrous effect on our food chain. If we don't protect our bees and they become extinct, the world will starve.

Please help protect Kangaroo Island's Ligurian bees by observing the restriction of not bringing any honey or honey products to the island.

Show your support for this passionate local business by not leaving Kangaroo Island before buying some jars of honey to take home with you. Apart from being very yummy, it makes the perfect gift to take back to family and friends.
